Welcome to Digital Scrapbook University!

How it works: Digital Scrapbook University* courses are online, self-paced classes with expert instructor guidance and feedback to help you learn or improve your digital scrapbooking skills. Our in-depth lessons offer intructions, screen shots, private forums for posting questions and answers, and special galleries for posting classwork. Private weekly chats are held with DSU instructors for further help and guidance.
After registering for a class, you will receive a receipt confirming your order. On the 1st of the month, you will receive a welcome letter from the DSU Dean and your instructor with class instructions and further info. Please click here for more info on how classes work.

This 4-week Photoshop course exclusively for scrapping shows step-by step how to create new 3 layouts: paper style, graphic montage, and elements collage. In-depth instructions on each tool,  filter,  and layer style used to create basic layouts, backgrounds, maneuver text, create simple elements, and save for printing and sharing on the web. DSU120 – Adobe Lightroom 1.3: Creative Photo Editing and Organization
Join us for a fun new photography developing adventure as it applies to Digital Scrapbooking!  In this class we will explore the Lightroom Workflow and Modules with class topics including sorting, organizing, keywords, filters, collections and more!  After we get our photo collections sorted, we will play and develop our photos.  We will explore making our photos to scrapbook look better and do some creative photo editing.  This class will also touch on creation, use and sharing of presets. Adobe Lightroom is a powerful image processing software and asset manager and can help digital scrapbookers manage growing photos collections. 

*** Please Note:  Lightroom does not incorporate the ability to catalog your PNG files.  It handles JPEG, RAW, TIFF, DNG***  This class is geared towards learn how to efficiently manage your growing photo and snapshot library!  Users of previous versions of Lightroom are welcome to join.  Please note, this class is written on V1.3 and may be slightly different or have slightly different menus and tools. This 4-week Paint Shop Pro Photo course especially for digital scrapping is perfect for beginners with moderate to no experience, or those learning a new software. In-depth instructions with screen shots and videos cover all the tools and techniques needed to create 4 complete layouts. Learn to use and customize digital graphics, create basic papers, maneuver text, install fonts, save layouts to share online and print. DSU151 – Photography: Taking Better Snapshots
Take your snapshots to the next level in this 4-week class. Topics and assignments will focus on avoiding common snapshot pitfalls, and learning techniques that will make your snapshots an even more meaningful center of your scrapbook pages. This 4-week Photoshop Elements course exclusively for scrapping shows step-by step how to create 3 new layouts: paper style, graphic montage, and elements collage. With Scraps of Digital which includes HP’s Creative Scrapbook Assistant, you can create scrapbook pages on your computer in very little time, and the results are sure to wow your friends and family. DSU175– MS Digital Image Pro: Intro to Digital Scrapbooking
Discover how you can use Microsoft's Digital Image editor to create your own scrapbook projects. From the fundamentals of page construction, to customizing ready-made elements, to the basics of creating your own elements from scratch, this course covers it all. (Instructions given are for Digital Image 2006, but users of earlier versions, such as Digital Image Pro 9 and 10, will also be able to follow along.) Instructor Lori Davis . $30

DSU180 – Lumapix FotoFusion: Introduction to Digital Scrapbooking (temporarily unavailable)
This 4-week class takes you through the basics of FotoFusion, including the various program tools and functions needed to create stunning scrapbook layouts. We will create layouts using the Auto-Collage, Template, Grid, and Free-Form options and explore ways to include page kits as well. This is a beginner-level class. You must have FotoFusion installed on your computer (Standard or Pro are both fine - we'll only be using the Standard features.) Download a trial version here. Instructor Kristen Skold $30

DSU185 – Picasa: Easy Photo Editing and Management (temporarily unavailable)
In this 2 week class we will cover many of the ways you can use Picasa to organize, manage and improve your photos. We will cover such things as sorting, labeling and cataloging your photo and image collections, along with basic and more advanced photo editing skills enabling you to recover artistic and desirable images often from less than perfect photos. DSU190 – Layout Design (2 week class)
This 2 week class covers all the aspects of creating a visually appealing layout. If you want your layout to WOW, then this is the class to learn HOW!!! It covers the basic styles of digital scrapbooking and then moves on to methods of achieving that eye catching layout. Topics covered include: Focal points, Flow, Grounding , Font use and colour use, and theory. Also covered are achieving Balance and techniques for visual appeal. DSU192 – Introduction to Graphics Tablets
In this 4 week class we will take a look at graphics tablets - what they are, why you'd want one, and what you can do with yours. The class will focus on Wacom tablets, but the main points apply to any graphics
tablet. (Note: You should have basic knowledge of an image editor such as Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements, or Paint Shop Pro, including some familiarity with layers.) Instructor Lori Davis . $30

DSU193 – Card Making: Digital to Hybrid
Come explore the craft of card making, using the digital scrapbooking skills and design techniques you already know!  You will put your digital kits to extra use in a new format and produce many custom cards perfect for using throughout the year.  From simple fully-digital designs to more complex hybrid creations, you will construct fun and beautiful cards of all shapes and sizes that your family and friends will love to receive.  NOTE: The projects created in this class are designed to be printed and, in many cases, embellished with physical elements.  Be prepared that outside (non-digital) tools and supplies will be essential. DSU195 – Introduction to Creating WordArt (2-week class) (temporarily unavailable)
A beginner class to introduce you to the world of creating word art. Learn how to create your own custom word art. This is a non-program specific course. You will need a basic knowledge of your program, such as how to add text, change text colors, etc. Please note- this is a TWO WEEK class. Instructor Tina Chambers. $15

DSU198 – Finding Inspiration Around You
In this class you will take a look around your home to discover many new ways to present and design your layouts. These will serve as inspiration not only for your day-to-day scrapbooking, but also for those times you have “scrapper's block", or when working on a theme album.  In this four week class, you will create as many as eight layouts, using different items and ideas from your world to compliment and enhance your photos and journaling. DSU211 – Adobe Photoshop: Creating Digital Elements for Beginners (Pre-requisite- DSU 110 or similar experience)
Begin to travel the path of element creation in this 4-week class for Adobe Photoshop users. In step by step lessons we will cover the tools and gain the skills to create visually realistic elements and will create new elements each week. Instructor Lauren Bavin. $30

DSU211/311 – Adobe Photoshop: Creating Digital Elements for Beginners and Advanced Users (self-paced) This class includes notes for both dsu 211 and dsu 311. It will suit those who want to work at an individual pace and perhaps not need to wait a week to finish a lesson, or those who wish to take longer than a week to complete a lesson.  There are 8 lessons which may be completed at your leisure.  There will be no chat times for this class but there will be a forum and you will have email access to the instructor. Once you have finished your lesson you only need email the instructor for the next. Instructor Lauren Bavin $60

DSU215 – Adobe Photoshop Actions and Automations ( Photoshop v.7 and above) (Pre-requisite- DSU 110 or similar experience)
They say every action has a reaction.  Well how would you like the reaction to be one click of a button and you get a Sepia Image, or Apply Texture to your paper, or one of MANY other actions you can run to speed up some of the processes in Photoshop.  Learn how to run the actions Photoshop provides, download some amazing actions from the web, and WRITE YOUR OWN!!  This is a 4 week class covering:  how to play, record, edit and write actions.  You will also learn how to use an action that has been written as a "tutorial".  We will also cover some of the other automation tasks such as, batch, droplets, picture packages and contact sheets.  Please understand that this class is NOT to explain the settings you must use for the actions.  The more you know about the styles, settings, filter, etc... the easier this will be for you to adjust.  Also, this class does have you downloading actions from the internet.  Please be aware of this BEFORE you take the class.  Lisa Carter nor DSP will be liable for any damage caused by downloading and/or running the actions.  You can still take the class and learn much from it, you will just skip the downloading portions of the class.  THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR PS ELEMENTS.  Instructor Lisa Carter $30

Did you ever wonder how to make a scalloped border, the dotted circle, perfect matting or how to extract an object and place it on a new background? Has the pen tool baffled you from the beginning, causing you to avoid it like the plague? Have you ever used your shape tool then resized the shape and ended up with jagged edges? Not after this class. The pen is your friend and you too can make amazing scrapbook pages and elements once you finish this 4 week class. You will be making tags, lace, eyelets, ribbon, silhouettes and so much more, all with your path tools. This class is loaded with freebies! You should have a basic understanding of Photoshop prior to taking this class. This is an In-Depth class on the Drawing Tools (Path Tools) in Photoshop. In this special edition 2 week class you will create from scratch your own complete Valentine themed page kit complete with multiple backgrounds and original elements, and then create a layout from that page kit . DSU250 – Adobe Photoshop: Photo Correction (Pre-requisite- DSU 110 or similar experience)
This photo correction class for Photoshop will cover basic corrections for the most common problems in photographs, like underexposure, overexposure, and damages like wrinkles, tears, and blemishes. Also some techniques will be explained, like sharpening, converting to black and white, enhancing black and white photographs, subject focus, enhancing selective objects, background manipulation, retouching portraits, and more. DSU261 – Adobe Photoshop Elements: Creating Digital Elements for Beginners (Pre-requisite- DSU 160 or similar experience) Create realistic embellishments in PSE in this 4-week class, using layer styles and patterns, as well as filters and brushes. Add realism to your layouts by making new elements each week - metal and wood objects and patterns, ribbons, fabric and fibers, tags, leather, and shapes. Instructor Emma Powell. $30

DSU270 – Adobe Photoshop Elements: Brushes (Pre-requisite- DSU 160 or similar experience)
A comprehensive 4-week class for in-depth exploration of brushes in Photoshop Elements. We'll learn how to use all the Brush-based tools, the Brushes Menu and Options, and practice different settings and techniques in several tutorials. Tutorials include: Aging Photos, Paper tearing, Making Custom Brushes, Downloading Brushes from the Internet Custom Grungy and painted backgrounds, and projects to show more creative ways to use the techniques.Instructors: Emma Powell $30

DSU290 – Exploring Digital Design Styles
This 4 week class is for scrapbookers who wish to extend their scrapbooking styles and branch out into some new design techniques. In each of the 4 weeks we will look at a different layout design style , Each week there will be supplied  downloadable digital tools and product to help the student complete layouts in that style. This class is a practical and interactive ,class and layouts can be modified and improved during the course of the lesson with the aid of ideas and suggestions of the tutors , and also from other class members. The general themes which run throughout the class include using colour flow and style to assist in achieving the desired tone of the layout. Particular styles covered include - Graphic and Grid style layouts, White space/Freestyle layouts, Shabby Multi layered Layouts and Blended Collage style layouts. This class is suitable for an intermediate level scrappers; beginning scrappers should take DSU190. Instructors Lauren Bavin and Sharon Topliss $30.

DSU292 – Adobe Photoshop: Creating and Using Overlays (PS and PSE Pre-requisite- DSU 110, DSU160 or similar experience) (formerly DSU290)
This 4 week course will explore the basics of using overlays - transparent works of art for your scrapbook pages!  Overlays are the latest look in digital scrapbooking; with such a versatile flair, they add pizzazz to your pages in no time flat.  This class will introduce you to using, overlays, and then spend three weeks learning to create your own awesome pieces of art.  Don't miss the fun of overlays! DSU295- Art of Journaling (not program specific)
In this four-week class, we will explore scrapbook journaling. We'll start with exercises to help you find and become more comfortable with your own journaling voice. We'll look at the foundations of good journaling and identify different journaling styles and see how they can affect a layout's emotional impact. Then we'll look at the basics of typography and the technicalities of font treatments. From font categories to kerning and leading, you'll gather the tools to treat your journaling as an artistic part of your layout. With weekly chats and a forum for our class, you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and compare notes with the instructor and fellow students as we learn the art of journaling! Regardless if you are comfortable or uncomfortable with journaling, you will learn how to make your journaling an artistic part of your layout. Continue on the jouney of element creating with this class by Lauren Bavin which will teach you the intricacies of embossing paper and metal, woodwork, carving, burning, sewing and patchwork, lace, tulle and ric-rac. This class gives you the skills to create unique and intricate backgrounds and elements for your scrapbook pages . You must have taken DSU 211 in order to have taken this class but you do not need to have taken DSU 311.You must have Photoshop 7 or above installed on your computer to take this class. DSU321 – Adobe Photoshop/Photoshop Elements: Advanced Montage (Pre-requisite: DSU 221)
An expansion on the techniques introduced in Beginning Montage, learn more tools, complex masks and selections, channels, adjustment layers, and backgrounds, with in-depth instructions, screen shots, and video! In this 4-week class, we explore advanced techniques that you can use in all sorts of scrapbooking projects. Master layers, blend modes and blend ranges. Make vectors work for you. DSU350 – Photography: Creating a Home Photography Studio (Pre-requisite DSU151)
Students will create their own home photography studio and learn the basics of natural light portraiture in this 4-week class. Build a portable photography backdrop stand out of PVC pipe (materials purchased at a hardware store for less than $10). Then create a backdrop from jersey fleece (materials purchased at a fabric store for less than $30). And then learn how to make your camera and the natural light in your garage (or in a room in your house with a large window) do amazing thing together! Come be a part of DSU 350!! DSU351 – Photography: Home Lighting (Pre-requisite DSU151 and DSU350)
Learn to work with lighting in your Home Studio! Depend no more on the whim of the available sunlight for awesome studio portraits at home! This course will focus on purchasing good, inexpensive lighting sources for your home studio setup, and learning the basics of lighting setup and function for home studio portraiture. Students will be responsible for the purchase of halogen work lights (one set under $50, two sets of lights for less than $100, depending on your location and shopping resources/resourcefulness), and cloth light diffusers (approximately $20). Halogen work lights can pose a safety hazard due to heat; please use caution when working with this type of home-made studio lighting. NOTE: This class is for intermediate students and beyond. Students must have a camera that you can set to manual mode and some sort of backdrop. Instructor Suzanne Walker. view syllabus $30
